Eval Manigat (1939-2008)

Eval Manigat was our « Quincy Jones » of the West Indies. The musical culture of this self taught artist came from multiple experiences that led him from Haitian big bands to latin jazz ensembles, funky grooves and African music. His hero was Milt Jackson, the sophisticated vibes player who inspired him the reverence of the instrument.

Founding member of Tropicana and co-director of Weber Sicot orchestra, Eval Manigat had more than 40 years of musical experience.

After arriving in Montreal in 1974, Eval Manigat  played with numerous musicians from all types of background. He won a JUNO Award in 1995 for his album Africa+ and toured in Europe Asia and Canada with his band Tchaka.

He also loved to play vibes with his latin jazz band, Many Ways

In 2005, he received a Folquis Award for his unique approach in the world music scene of Quebec and in 2008, Musique Multi Montreal honored him with the Boubacar Diabaté Award..

For the last 2 years in Haïti, Eval Manigat taught a small group of young musicians modern musical techniques while teaching an international musical language that would transcend every frontiers.
